What is Social Media and Why do we use it?

According to recent statistics 60% of the world uses social media with the average user having 6 to 7 platforms with people ages 16-21 spending an average of 3 hours a day on social media. “The term “social media,” in one recent definition described as “digital platforms, services and apps built around the convergence of content sharing, public communication, and interpersonal connection”, is however not entirely clear-cut, but often used as an umbrella term for a range of Internet-based applications, including social network sites (SNS), blogs, micro-blogs, and video- or image-sharing sites, which allow users to network and distribute their own content.” (Bengtsson & Johansson). The Bengtsson and Johansson article talks about the various reasons people report using social media, the reasons being. The first reason people use social media according to the article is to fill empty slots. Some people, including me, report watching videos on Youtube or TikTok while they eat, some check Instagram while riding the bus to class or work, personally me and my roommates love watching TikTok while we workout on the treadmill, people even use social media while they go to the bathroom. Secondly, people use social media because it is just part of their ritual. One of the first things people do in the morning is reach for their cell phone and check various platforms, for me that is Snapchat. From the moment we wake up to right before we go to bed we are on social media all throughout the day. For me my ritual goes as follows; I wake up, check Snapchat, get ready, eat breakfast and watch Tiktok, then I go do my other daily tasks while still checking Facebook, Snapchat, and TikTok any chance I get. Finally right before bed I watch TikToks and Snapchat with all my friends. The third reason the article says people use social media is for mood management. Social media has become a place for people to be inspired, get life advice, or to just have a laugh. I believe it is becoming one of the first things people turn to for anything and everything they may need and it is something that we can turn to. It “can be used for purposes such as relaxation or an escape from everyday dullness, the respondents described how their social media habits could be aimed at achieving certain moods or feelings, for example, to “relax for a few seconds.” Others, similarly, emphasized how different platforms would add “fun,” “a good feeling,” “an energy kick,” or “a bit of pep.” Such responses highlight social media as a potent tool for “emotional self-regulation'''' (Bengtsson & Johansson). I personally can relate to all of these reasons and though it can be harmful and have its negative effects, I believe social media provides us with so many opportunities. We can learn new things, branch out, meet new people, connect with old friends, express ourselves in ways we may not be able to in the real world, anything is possible. That is what I love about social media and I can only see it getting better.

My Relationship with Social Media

“Since their emergence in the early 2000s, social media have continued to increase in popularity, particularly among adolescents and young adults” (Bengtsson & Johansson). Since I grew up in a time where I had technology at the tip of my fingers before I could even walk. I started using social media at a very young age, maybe a little earlier than I even should have. My relationship with social media began in 2008 at the age of 5 when I started out just watching Youtube videos. Since then my relationship with social media has evolved to several other platforms like Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat, Instagram, TikTok, BeReal, and much more. Some of these platforms I no longer use and some I use way more than others. When I first started using social media and actually posting content I honestly had no clue what I was doing or what social media even was, I just knew all my older siblings used it and I wanted to be just like them. When I first truly started using social media I was about 9 years old and I had begged my parents for months to let me get Instagram when they finally agreed I was ecstatic. There I started posting pictures of random things and doing all the trends like MCM (Man Crush Monday) and WCW (Women Crush Wednesday). Since I was the first of my friends to get a phone and social media I did not really enjoy social media but when my friends finally joined the game, I was all for it. In 2014 I joined Snapchat and Musically which is now known as TikTok. There I finally learned what “snackable” content was and I loved it. It was entertaining, short, I got to show my creativity more, and I was able to connect with my friends. Social media began to become a part of my everyday life, my ritual, it was my main form of communication, and my go to for entertainment. In 2017, at the age of 14, TikTok became popular again. I logged into my old account and then once again social media became an even bigger part of my life. I was watching TikTok instead of tv, using it during study breaks, on the car ride to school/ basketball practice, and while I was eating lunch or dinner. Once I started high school and life became a little more stressful I started turning to social media for a little relaxation or a mental health break. Finally in 2020 my relationship with social media evolved one last time and I began using Facebook to keep in touch with family members and let them know how my life was going, especially as high school came to an end and college was approaching. Now as I near graduation and I think about everything I have done and been through I am glad I have social media to visually reminisce all the fun times I had. As I get older I am sure my relationship with social media will continue to change as it has so much throughout my 20 years of life but I am glad that I get to grow up in a time where social media exists.
